Rules and Strategy

Five Card Stud - Poker Rules

In Five Card Stud, players will receive five cards, one "down" card and four "up" cards.

Your "hand" is determined by using all five of your cards and the best hand or the last player standing wins the pot.(The pot may be won by someone betting and no one calling prior to getting five cards.)

There are four betting rounds. One bet and three raises are allowed on each betting round. To continue to play, players must call all action to them on each "Street" or betting round.

Here is the procedure for Five Card Stud:

Everyone "antes" (puts a predetermined amount in the pot before the cards are dealt).

Each player is dealt two cards (one "down" card and one "up" card).

1) The lowest "up" card initiates the action with a "Bring-In" bet. (If two or more players have the same lowest card, the person who brings it in is determined by suit order progressing from clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades).

2) Another card is dealt face-up. The highest hand showing begins the action by checking or betting.

3) Another card is dealt face-up. Player bet.

4) The final card is dealt down. Players bet

Upon completion of the final round of betting, the best hand or the last player standing wins the pot.

Note:

In five Card Stud The antes, bring-ins, and betting limits are determined by the size of the game.
