Pre Flop Raises In No Limit Texas Holdem
Successful no-limit Texas hold’em requires correct play in all phases of the game, from before the flop to the river. However, before you get to the end of the hand, you need to deal with the beginning, and one of the first decisions you will need to make is whether to raise pre-flop. There are a number of considerations in this regard, no matter if you play regular cash games or if you play poker tournaments.
Pre-Flop Raise Considerations
What is Your Position?
Some players, understanding that position is valuable in no-limit hold’em, think that late position provides an opportunity to stick in a big raise. In reality, you should be prone to raise less in position because you don’t mind a call as much. In early position, a bigger raise that might end the hand right away is often more favorable. That being said, you should be inclined to raise more often in late position, since the combination of your extra information and the fact that you have taken control of the hand gives you a big edge and thus positive expected value.
How Many People Have Come in Front of You?
If it has been folded or limped to you, you should be inclined to raise, as you may take down a pot uncontested. If it has been raised before you, you must give your opponent credit for a hand that can call a re-raise, and act accordingly. You can attempt to re-raise an opponent that you perceive is raising weak, but you must proceed carefully.
What Are Your Cards?
It may surprise many that this consideration is listed last, but it is often the least importance when it comes to deciding on a pre-flop raise. While you should of course raise more often with strong hole cards than with bad ones, the right circumstances can make any two cards as strong as pocket aces.
